Pancha Kriya – 5 Yogic Cleansing Practices
“Early morning if you do Yoga and then take bath in cold water, come and sit and do the Guru puja, listen to these great truths, straight away it settles down in your inner space. Yoga simply happens in your inner space. You need just prepared body. Nothing else.” – says the Master of Yoga, Nirahara, Paramahamsa Nithyananda.
The Pancha Kriya forms your essential routine. Your daily ritual when done with spirit, become spiritual.
Just as an athlete or a Yogi, prepares his body every single day with steady practice to expand the limits of his body, a Nirhari too does Pancha Kriyas to support his/her body, when the body gets flooded with the intense energy during the initiation by the Master, who Himself is the source of the Cosmic energies.
As per the ancient vedic science of health and wellbeing – the Ayurveda, our body is based on the principles of the 3 doshas. Doshas are the biological energies made up of the 5 elements of Water, Air, Space, Fire, Earth, that make up every human body-mind system, which perform different physiological, hormonal functions in the body. The 3 doshas are vata, pitta and kapha doshas. The Pancha kriya is a powerful way to keep these doshas in balance, by releasing out the impurities stored inside our system for years.
A Clean Body, the Ultimate Spiritual Solution
The Master, a born Yogi Himself, reveals the untold truths of our body-mind. “You need to know a very important truth – the power of problem can never be reduced, the power of solution can never be increased by mental practices. It is simply your hormonal space. Your body needs to be clean. Nothing else. It just needs a chemical balance. Nothing else. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa says – ‘keep your head and stomach always cool’, because both are connected, just by the right body, means keeping your body clean.
Your body’s sickness, it has nothing to do with your mind. I tell you, work on your ‘Body’. You just need to keep you stomach clean and light. Nothing else. You just need to carry your body gracefully. Nothing else!”
Pancha kriya cleanses the body and makes it ready for the Samyama and the Haritaki powder is said to activate the non-mechanical parts of the brain.

Along with Pancha kriya, a Nirahari participant also begins and ends the day with powerful herbal Siddha drinks – Neema Juice and the ultimate nectar, Haritaki powder. Here are the 5 Pancha Kriya techniques with instructions.
1. Oil Pulling – Wash Away the Toxins
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice of Yogis, Sages for detox, healing, and rejuvenation of body. Now, it is considered a very simple, and safe healing therapy by itself.
History – It is mentioned in the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita, where it is called Kavala Gandoosha or Kavala Graha.
It deeply works on your body, and has significant healing effects from your skin to cells. It eliminates impurities and throws them out, right from within your digestive, throat tracts.
The oil pulls all mucous, bacteria and toxins from your body through your saliva. According to Ayurvedic medicine, mucous is a poison that must be removed. This improves the teeth, they become white, firm, and fresh, and you get a relaxed feeling on waking up, disappearing dark pouches below the eyes, a new appetite and energy, better memory and deep sleep.
Other significant healing effects are elimination of ulcers, gum problems, skin problems, and cooling the body.
When to do – Daily Early Morning. Right after you wake-up on empty stomach.
Repeat – Once a day is enough. If you wish to repeat, Make sure you do it on an empty stomach.
First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 tbsp of either sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 – 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out. If it’s still yellow, you haven’t done it long enough.
You can do this 2 more times during the day if you want to detox faster. Spit it out when your mouth is full and rinse your mouth out well. Do not swallow the oil. It now contains parasites and bacteria. Do not gargle in the throat.
This is it. Your secret practice to total body and skin cleansing.
2. Enema – A Clean Stomach is All You Need
Paramahamsa Nithyananda gives a deeper definition for the term “clean stomach”. He refers to our hormonal space, to the status of our hormonal equilibrium. When we experience the internal chemical balance again and again, we create the alchemical shift to a physical state which embraces divine consciousness. This cleansing of our bio-memories – establishing a “clean stomach” – raises us into the zone of enlightenment. In Master’s own words –
“By keeping your stomach clean you will become enlightened. You don’t need any other practice. You do not need big pranayamas, kumbhakas, puja, yoga, work, karma yoga. Power, the power of solution feels smaller than the power of the problem just because of your stomach. Your body’s sickness, it has nothing to do with your mind, I tell you. You might have practiced controlling anger and lust for 35 years. If your stomach is upset, a little bit of food which does not suit your stomach is enough, all your 35 year practice is in the air. You will be screaming.
Whole thing boils down to your body’s hormonal situation, your body’s chemical space , balancing your body’s chemicals. I tell you, just keep the stomach clean.”
Our stomach region is directly connected to our worries. It stores our thoughts, and root-patterns that limit us from experiencing the real jewels of our creative, potential energy. Enema, by clearing these residual matters helps us to experience health to the optimum. It keeps the navel center healthy, and worry-free, and cools the digestive system, the fire energy, ‘jataragni’ that is responsible for digesting food. When in imbalance, we experience indigestion, ulcers, allergies, to even chronic diseases.
When we take plain water enema, it removes all the feacal matter completely. All the physical, metal, emotional disturbances are caused by toxins absorbed from this residual faecal matters that are not removed by natural means. The energy flow in the body happens without any blockage. This also helps you to come out of many chronic diseases and skin allergies.
Fill the enema container with clean water. With steady pressure, gently insert enema tip into rectum with a slight side-to-side movement, with tip pointing toward navel. Insertion may be easier if person receiving enema bears down, as if having a bowel movement. This helps relax the muscles around the anus. Do not force the enema tip into rectum as this can cause injury. You may even oil the enema tip for smooth insertion. It is not necessary to empty the enema container completely, as it contains more liquid than needed. Remove enema tip from rectum and wait until urge to evacuate is strong.
When to Do? – Daily Early Morning. Repeat, when you need to clean the stomach.
3. Eye Cleansing with Eye Pot
Eyes are the most used organs of our body. We perceive our world with our eyes, and they also are the most over-used from being locked into our laptops to our cell phone to TV screens. The eyes then, lack energy and release heat, crying for relief, and cooling.
Eye cleansing process cleanses the eyes by removing external dust particle, body heat and secretions of the eyes that come in the way of normal movement of the eye lids that irritate the eyes. This process helps in having clear vision, reduces itching, eye strain and burning eyes. It cools the eyes and keeps fresh. Most essentially, for a Nirhari, it cools the body very powerful, energizing the eyes and improve the vision. It even reduces under eye bags.
Fill the cup with lukewarm water. Tilt your head down, position the cup snugly against your eye, and then tilt your head back so your eye (and the cup) are facing upwards. Blink several times and move your eyes in a circular pattern to help get the water fully in your eye.
When to do? – Daily morning. Repeat as many times as you please. Especially, when you are tired staring at your work screens, or after long drives, or late nights simply repeat and experience instant cooling, and healing.
When to do? – Daily morning, along with Enema, and Neti.
Repeat – Repeat, as you many times as you like. Carry the cup with you, where you go.
4. Jala Neti and Sutra Neti – Nirahari’s Access to Prana, energy food
The Master speaks about the extraordinary benefits of doing Neti. Neti process helps a Nirahari to clean the whole respiratory track from nose to lungs. It cleanses the breathing process, removing all blockages from our breathing. This makes a Nirahari inhale, exhale deeply, absorbing deep Prana, the life-force through air, their main source of food, energy.
Master stresses the need for deep Prana flow for all meditation and yogic processes. Ideally, a Nirahari should have deep breathing flow from every tip of the body. More so, the inhale and exhale should extend on to the knees, then we know, the Nirhara process is really successful. Neti helps achieve this.
Neti removes all the dirt and bacteria filled mucus from within the nose. It also helps to drain the sinus cavities. This in turn, will help to reprogram the body’s natural mechanisms against nasal infections such as hay fever, allergies, sinusitis and other upper respiratory complaints like sore throats and coughs, post nasal drip, inflammation of tonsils and adenoids.
It is beneficial for illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis as it reduces the tendency for mouth breathing by freeing the nostrils of mucus. It has a cooling and soothing effect on the brain by drawing out excessive heat, and is therefore beneficial for headaches, migraine, epilepsy, temper tantrums, hysteria, depression and general mental tension.
Physical Benefits – Neti is of great benefit for problems associated with the eyes. It helps flush the tear ducts, encouraging clearer vision and gives a sparkle to the eyes. It can be beneficial for certain types of ear disorders such as middle ear infections, glue ear, tinnitus (ear ringing) conditions.
Neti improves sensitivity of the olfactory nerves, helping to restore lost sense of smell, and thereby benefits the relationship with taste and the digestive processes.
Spiritual Benefits – Neti has subtle effects on the pineal and pituitary glands that control the hormonal system. This has a harmonizing effect on emotional behavior. Neti affects the psychic center known as Ajna Chakra, the third eye i.e. the cosmic browsing center, which helps in awakening higher states of meditation. It helps to stimulate better powers of visualization and concentration and gives a feeling of lightness and clarity to the mind.
Neti has infinite benefits. It is also excellent for overcoming addictions such as smoking. Since it reduces the tendency for mouth breathing, Neti re-sensitizes the nose to the actual pollution of ingesting smoke, thereby de-programming the brain of the physical and psychological addiction.
1. Fill your Water Neti pot with luke warm clean water and add a pinch of crystal salt to it.
2. Now, keeping your body in a straight posture, tilt your head a little forward, and bend it to the left, to insert the water neti tube slightly into your right nostril. Gently pour the water with slight movement of your hand holding the Neti pot.
3. Allow your mouth to slightly remain open to breathe.
4. You will now feel the water flowing from your right nasal track up to your head, and pouring out from your left nostril. You can occasionally stop to sneeze out the mucus that begins to release out from your whole respiratory track.
People who do the Jala Neti (water Neti) daily have a smooth outflow of water from the other nostril, indicating a clean and healthy respiratory system.
When to do? – Daily morning, along with eye cleansing, and enema.
Repeat – Repeat Neti 2-3 time a day, if you feel the need to clean your breathing. Do it before any yogic kriyas, meditation process to increase the flow of Prana, life-force.
Nirahari’s Tip – Doing Neti morning and evening keeps the body energy regulated, cool and light, and releases the excess heat generated. When you feel a drop in energy, or tiredness, or heaviness in head, or any cold, a Neti comes to your rescue.
5. Navadhi Kriya
Navadhi Kriya is a small and simple exercise to balance the three doshas of our body. The three doshas are vata, pitta and kapha, and they aptly represent the three forces of Nature; the air, fire and earth elements. When they are in balance, the body becomes free of any illness or disease. It’s time to bring in integrity within our thinking and take ownership of our body. Just uttering the words ‘I own my body. I declare the clearance to have a healthy body’, to oneself and doing this simple kriya will help a person to create a real Yogic Body.
This is generally practiced in many Ayurveda retreats as the initial cleansing procedures before the actual treatment. The mechanism is that pitta from liver, and vata, kapha from the chest area are expelled out, thus balancing them. It is strongly recommended for the initiated Niraharis to do this kriya regularly, at least once a week.
Ayurveda claims that regular vomiting of the pitta especially, improves the intestines and reduces the excess belly fat. It has also been researched that this Navadhi Kriya can heal cancer because cancer arises due to imbalance of the three doshas. The imbalanced pitta of the body gets removed from the system through the oral route.
1. Clip your nails and clean the thumb well before proceeding.
2. Apply a pinch of ‘Haritaki’ powder on the fingertip. Applying haritaki powder will help get rid of ulcers, if any, and remove bad breath.
3. Massage the upper palate in a circular manner.
4. Lie down and rest the body for approx. 45 min, to allow the body to settle down.
